  1. Positively charged particle emitted from the
  2. nucleus of a radioactive atom. It is one of
  3. the products of the spontaneous
  4. disintegration of radioactive elements such
  5. as radium and thorium, and is identical with
  6. the nucleus of a helium atom; that is, it
  7. consists of two protons and two neutrons. The
  8. process of emission, alpha decay, transforms
  9. one element into another, decreasing the
  10. atomic number by two, and the atomic weight
  11. by four. See radioactivity.
